He was the son of the German professor of Pneumatics, Dr. Ernst Lessing, and was educated at the universities of Leipzig and Berlin; he devoted himself chiefly to mathematical physics, but also served as an assistant to Professor Häckel at Jena, and in 1853 published a work on hydrostatics under Häckel's direction, in which he made use of the technique of molecular dynamics to explain the forces acting on molecules in liquids. His chief work is probably his "Elemente der Theorie des Kreislaufs" (Berlin, 1866), one of the most important works on that subject.

He also gave much attention to mathematical problems in physiology and meteorology, and became an authority on magnetism, electro-biology, and other kindred subjects. His principal works are: "Die Mechanik des Kreislaufs" (Berlin, 1856); "Einleitung zur Theorie der Hydrodynamik" (Leipzig, 1858); "Die Elektricität und die Chemie im Blute" (Leipzig, 1863); "Prinzipien der Anwendung der Elektricität zu mechanischen Zwecken" (Leipzig, 1865); "Über elektrische Wirkungen bei der Bildung von Salzsäure" (Leipzig, 1865); "Die Mechanik des Kreislaufs als Grundlage einer Physiologie des Organismus" (Jena, 1868); "Über die Theorie der Dynamik bei den Atomen und Molekülen" (Leipzig, 1869); "Ueber die Elektricität bei den Atomen und ihre Beziehung zur Atmosphäre" ("Annalen der Physik," vol. xviii., pp.
